100 Things About Me

1. I was born in Topeka, Kansas. I left as soon as possible and would never go back.

2. I have three children, they are wonderful most of the time. When they are not, I drink.

3. I’ve been a Registered Nurse for 10 years. I hated it the first 5 years, then I began travel nursing. Now I love it.

4. I’m completely obsessed with scuba diving. If I’m not diving, i’m thinking about diving. If I’m not on a trip, I’m planning a dive trip. It occupies a significant amount of my waking thoughts.

5. Sex occupies a good portion of my remaining thought time.

6. I love my children, but frequently I am not fond of other peoples’ children.

7. I love babies…they are so cute and cuddly, and have no free will. Once they become toddlers, I send them to my husband, and I will accept them back at about age 3.5 to 4. Then I love them again.

8. I hate hate HATE cigarette smoke. I find it disgusting and heinous. I love California’s no smoking laws. They ROCK!

10. I did not have a relationship with my biological father until I was an adult.

11. My mother divorced Stepfather #1 when I was 16, and married Stepfather #2 when I was seventeen. She divorced #2 when I was 26. She is currently married to Stepfather #3. My children call him “Uncle” because they already had too many “Grandpas”.

12. At Christmastime, it’s not uncommon for my children to say, “This is from Grandpa _____. Who is that?”

13. My mother changes her name back to her maiden name after every divorce. In my lifetime, she has had 6 different last names.

14. I come from a long line of insane women. It seems to improve a bit with each generation. My daughters should be close to normal.

15. I love animals. I used to like cats. Then I decided they were fun to ponder, but sort of nasty to have around. Now I love dogs. However, I think the book “Bad Cat” should be required reading…it’s hilarious.

16. I have a standard poodle named Ojo. I paid too much for him, and spent a year on a waiting list because I wanted an apricot colored one. He ROCKS! He’s an awesome dog.

17. I had a cat named “Killer” when I was growing up. He was beautiful and I cried so hard when he died at age 11.

18. I’ve had one other very cool cat, named Patches. She disappeared when she was 7.

19. I spent 2 years in Costa Rica. It was beautiful. I miss the fruits most of all.

20. I live in New Mexico, but spend a good part of my year in California. I hate the taxes and the traffic and the sheer number of people and the cost of living. But I love California for it’s free spirit, geographic beauty, and the ocean. I consider myself a Californian in a lot ways, even though I am only a part time resident.

21. I am a Sagittarius.

22. I believe very strongly in my zodiac birth sign, and feel that it says alot about who I am and why I am the way that I am.

23. I think my zodiac sign is the best one. I’m sorry if you’re not one of the lucky archers.

24. Nearly every man I’ve ever been romantically interested in has been a Libra or an Aquarius. My closest friends are usually Aquarians. I think I’m drawn to the water sign. See #4.

25. I hurt peoples feelings easily. This is not out of malice, but rather because I tend to be outspoken and sometimes careless with my words, not realizing that they are hurtful.

26. I think I am a gypsy in disguise. I become restless if I spend too much time in one place. I am trying to control this urge, because my kids have begged to stay in one place for awhile.

27. I change my mind ALL THE TIME. I hate it when people remember my previous views and remind me.

28. I am a republican. I don’t always agree with all party views but fiscally I feel that it’s the right path. I despise alot of the far right. Though I’ve come to like Ann Coulter. Any chick that can come out and say, “I think we should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them all to Christianity” has balls, even if she doesn’t. As I state later, I like opinionated people, even if I disagree with them.

29. I have an unhealthy obsession with the color green. It rules my wardrobe in every hue. Three cars in a row were green. Lime is probably my favorite green.

38. I love sea turtles. I have turtle decorations, turtle scrubs, turtle jewelry. I love them because they are so slow and awkward on land, but graceful and beautiful gliding through the water.

39. I love to shop for clothes and cosmetics.

40. I also like expensive handbags, and I like almost anything made by Brighton.

41. I like earrings and bracelets. I can’t stand rings, I feel like they are confining. My husband has threatened to sell my wedding ring more than once due to the fact that I don’t wear it. But since he doesn’t wear one either, I really don’t care.

42. I am a terrible flirt. It gets me in trouble.

43. My hair color changes all the time. With each season. Or more. The only consistancy is that it’s darker in the winter, lighter in the summer. I go from dark brunette to almost blonde.

44. I’ve seen the movie “Finding Nemo” at least 20 times. I was amazed by the way the animators captures the movement of sunlight underwater. And I thought Ellen was funny as hell as Dorie. 45. “A Party? Great! I LOVE Parties!!” LOL

46. I am a loyal friend to people that I’ve grown to trust over the years, and would do anything for those friendships. But if you’re a newbie and you piss me off, go to hell.

47. i believe the concept of “Til Death Do Us Part” is bullshit. I have raised my children to embrace the concept, “People change. Deal with it.” and not to accept society judging you as “failure” just because a person changes and you decide perhaps you should go your seperate ways.

48. The amount of time and money that I devote to scuba diving is a huge point of contention in my marriage.

49. If I had thought this marriage thing through, I would have negotiated a better deal. Still the same person…but a better deal.

50. I think it’s healthy to spend time away from your spouse. I think it helps you grow as a person to be alone.

51. I hate Hillary Clinton. I think she’s a bitch. Even if she is smart and used her husband to get to the top.

52. I hate being compared to her. She’s homely. And she spells her name wrong.

53. I liked Monica much better. I would have blown him too. I just thought it was a little weird that she kept that dress. I’d have swallowed the evidence.

55. I find tall, dark men amazingly sexy. However, I always end up with blue-eyed blonds.

56. I like the fact that I’m a flirt. I was once accused of “Setting back the women’s lib movement 20 years.” I was proud of that.

When my boss heard that the hung over college medical records clerk was taking vital signs, she flipped and said, “I pay those nurses $35K a year. they can take their own vital signs.” In 1990, that was alot of money. I was making $4.00 an hour. I signed up for nursing school the next day.

63. On the first day of nursing school, when asked about why I became a nurse, I lied. I said I did it to “help people.” I figured I was “people”.

64. I once had my ass autographed by band members at a Parrothead party. I was proud.

65. I dropped acid a few times in high school.

66. Once, while on acid, I thought I had discovered the meaning of life in a poster of the Joker from the movie, “Batman.” But the next day, it was just a poster. I was a little disappointed with that one. So I quit dropping acid.

67. I also smoked pot in high school. But I was never a good smoker because it hurt my lungs.

68. I tried pot again in my late 20’s. I ended up with piercings. We won’t discuss where.

69. I don’t smoke pot anymore. For one, I hate smoke. It stinks. For another, I was pretty much out of places to pierce unless I got really radical…or really visible.

71. Stargazer lillies are my favorite flower.

72. Peridots are my favorite colored stones. Probably because my favorite color is lime green.

76. I find organized reilgion by and large stifling and hypocritical. It is another point of contention in my marriage.

77. I believe in God as a higher power, and that God presents himself to his children in a way they can understand. So I don’t believe the Hindu is wrong for seeing God as reincarnated in a cow, and I don’t believe the Christians are wrong for seeing salvation in the worship of Christ, and I don’t believe the Buddhist is wrong for um…whatever they believe. If it’s good, and it embraces the good in fellow mankind, then it is beneficial. God is personal.

78. If I could have one wish granted by a genie, I’d wish to be a marine mammal. Far away from tuna nets.

92. I love my “alone” time, and in fact, crave it. I enjoy my own company.

93. I love art museums. In fact, they turn me on. Something about cameras all around, and naked statues from the Greco/Roman era, or nude paintings from the Renaissance. It really gets to me.

94. Everyone who I’ve ever mentioned the above to has proclaimed me, “Weird.”

95. I love music, and know alot of songs but rarely pay attention to artist or title. I have music from almost all genres, but alternative and rock is my favorite. 96. I think Renee Zellweger has amazing taste in men…at least in husbands. Because Kenny Chesney is awesome. I love his voice and can listen to him forever. And I hope he feeds her well because she really needs to gain about 10 pounds.

97. I think Uncle Kracker is sexy in a whiskey tango, trailer park, tattooed sort of way. My husband thinks I’m weird for that. Among other things.

Why diving?

Filed under: SCUBA - Hilary @ 9:30 am

I never was good at sports. I’m tall, but not tall enough for basketball or volleyball. Also, I’m uncoordinated. And I’m slow. And I don’t really possess “team spirit” because mostly I want all the credit for myself. Well….so as you can see. I was never good at sports. When I was in college, I worked as a medical records clerk. I remember seeing pictures from one of the doctors who had visited the Galapagos Islands. Did I spell that right? Anyway, the pictures were FASCINATING! Turtles and sharks and marine iguanas. I was really amazed. I knew right then I wanted to learn to dive. Of course I had no money, and lost sight of that goal. However, several years, a marriage, and a couple of years later, I went on a girls trip to Mexico, and the Discover Scuba course was offered. My friend Jamie and I played in the pool for a couple of hours, had some basic instruction, and then they threw us in the Pacific. We sunk to 30 feet, and looked around. At mostly nothing…sand and a few fish. But I was hooked! The minute I took my first breath on scuba, I knew I had finally found a sport about which I was passionate. I took the full certification class shortly afterwards, and was certified in Key West, Florida. I didn’t do alot with it for a couple of years, my son was born and life’s path took me in a different direction. But I never lost the love of the marine world, or that craving to breath compressed air and explore the underwater mysteries. I became active again in 2002, and have continued to dive since, logging several dozen dives at various locations around California, Mexico, and Central America. I’ve taken several continuing education classes, something I think is vital to the sport. Also, I’ve expanded into diving colder water, wearing a drysuit. (No more cold shivers from California waters!) If you have any questions, I’d LOVE to answer them. It is never very hard to get me to talk about diving.
